In his introductory press conference, New York Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns got right to the point when he was asked about the future of star first baseman Pete Alonso. “I expect Pete to be the Opening Day first baseman next year,” Stearns said.

There have been rumors and speculation about Pete’s future with the club going back to the trade deadline this year. The big-time slugger is scheduled to be a free agent after the 2024 season.

“Pete is a great player and he’s also great in the clubhouse, and he’s also homegrown. All of that matters,” Stearns said.

The 28-year-old Alonso finished the 2023 season third in Major League Baseball with 46 home runs and second with 118 RBIs. He hit .217/.318/.504 in 154 games for the Mets this year.

Alonso will enter the 2024 season tied with Howard Johnson for fourth in Mets team history with 192 home runs.
