Starling Marte finished a tough week in the most memorable manner possible after making an emotional return to the Mets at the weekend. Activated off the bereavement list, Marte was back in the lineup for New York on Saturday against the Rockies at Coors Field. And it didn’t take long for an incredible script to be dropped from the heavens.

Marte lost his grandmother, Brigada Gonzalez, who raised the outfielder following the death of his mother. Furthermore, the week also marked the anniversary of the tragic passing of Marte’s wife. You don’t get worst weeks than that but, needing a distraction, Marte turned to the sport that has saved him time and time again. And, once again, it saved him once more.

Up at the plate for his first at-bat of the day in the first game of the doubleheader, the 33-year-old clearly had both his grandmother and wife with him. He used all of the pent-up emotion from the past few days on the first pitch he saw.

Marte absolutely crushed a four-seam fastball he saw from German Marquez, sending the pitch into right field before circling the bases. After crossing the plate, he looked up to the heavens in a really emotional and poignant moment.

You could tell how much that two-run homer meant to Marte, a lot more than the fact it scored Brandon Nimmo and gave the Mets a 2-0 lead in the first inning. It was indeed a blessing from Marte’s loved ones up above, and the veteran reflected on a special at-bat after the game:

“It meant a lot to put the team ahead right there from the very beginning, and we ended up taking control of the game from that point,” Marte said. “That’s something for the people who are up in heaven, my loved ones that are up there, just hoping they are proud of me.”

“She (Marte’s grandmother) was the one that raised me and my two sisters, so everything we have today from our growth, our maturity, we learned it from her. She taught us everything. It’s sad for the whole family but you just have to continue to move forward.”

The Marte home run came off the bat at a 108.4 MPH. He also impressed with his usual stellar defense out in right field. The veteran’s return inspired his team who went on to win the first game 5-1. Him being back in the lineup is a huge boost for New York.
