Update as of 11:40 a.m.:

After the league’s review of the positive COVID-19 test result in the Giants’ organization, it’s been determined that said result was a false positive and that there was no indication of an infection as per MLB. As a result, the Giants are scheduled to play a doubleheader with the Padres starting this afternoon.

Looking back…

Last night, the Mets fell to the Blue Jays by a score of 3-2.

Seth Lugo wasn’t necessarily sharp, but he stuck it out in order to get through 5.1 innings. Lugo ended his night after 91 pitches, seven hits, three runs (all earned), and five strikeouts.

There wasn’t much to write home about on the offensive side, either.

A Jake Marisnick RBI double in the fourth was about it for the Mets – aside from J.D. Davis‘s RBI groundout in the seventh – as the team went a dismal 1-for-11 with RISP.

Playoff picture…

With just 14 games left on their schedule, the Mets – currently six games out of first in the NL East – only have eyes for the Wild Card.

Following last night’s loss, the Mets (21-25) now sit two games back from a Wild Card spot, trailing both the Brewers (20-23) and the Rockies (21-24) as all three teams look to knock off those at the top.

On Saturday, both teams suffered losses of their own – the Brewers to the Cubs, the Rockies to the Angels – thus preventing the Mets from falling even further down the ladder.

As of today, the top two spots in the NL Wild Card standings are occupied by the Giants (23-22) and the Marlins (21-21). The Giants, following a positive COVID-19 test result within the organization, have not played since Thursday. The Marlins took a loss of their own on Saturday to the Phillies.

Looking ahead…

This afternoon, the Mets – looking to close that small gap in the NL Wild Card race – face off against the Blue Jays in the final game of their three-game series in Buffalo.

Left-hander David Peterson (4-1, 4.26) will take the mound in his second start since returning to the rotation, with hopes that it will be better than the first. In his last start against the Phils, Peterson pitched just two innings, giving up three hits and five runs (all earned). Peterson will go head-to-head with the Jays’ own lefty, Hyun Jin Ryu (3-1, 3.19).

As for the other teams in the hunt, the Marlins will continue their battle with the Phillies in a doubleheader starting this afternoon – potentially a key opportunity for the Mets to gain ground if Miami were to fall twice. The Brewers will play the Cubs yet again mid-afternoon, and the Rockies will finish off their series with the Angels shortly after.
