Looking back…

Yesterday, the Mets lost to the Blue Jays in the rubber match of their series in Buffalo by a score of 7-3.

David Peterson tossed five innings, allowing two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out two. He was lifted after 81 pitches, and the combination of Brad Brach and Jared Hughes faltered in the sixth. They combined to allow five runs in the sixth, and turned a 2-1 Toronto lead into a 7-1 score.

The Mets scratched across 12 hits including eight against Hyun Jin Ryu, yet they only pushed one run across on the Blue Jays’ lefty. Michael Conforto, Todd Frazier, Dom Smith, and Brandon Nimmo each had two hits, and Smith drove in two more runs.

Luis Guillorme replaced Jeff McNeil in the fourth inning because McNeil was suffering from what the Mets described as “gastrointestinal discomfort”.

Playoff picture…

The NL East is firmly out of reach, as the Mets (21-26) trail the Braves by seven games with 13 left to play.

The Marlins (23-21) overtook the Phillies for the second spot in the division after sweeping a doubleheader from Philadelphia on Sunday. The Mets sit 3.5 games back of the Marlins for that second NL East spot.

The Brewers (20-24) were no-hit by Cubs righty Alec Mills on Sunday. The Rockies (21-25) also dropped their finale against the Angels. This means the Mets keep pace rather than falling further. The team that those three teams are trailing for the second NL Wild Card spot is the San Francisco Giants (23-24), who were swept in a doubleheader in San Diego on Sunday. The Mets are just two games behind the Giants despite how bleak things look at the moment.

Looking ahead…

The Mets have their final off day of the season today. On Tuesday, the Mets will open up a three-game set against the Wild Card-leading Phillies in Philadelphia. Rick Porcello (1-4, 6.07 ERA) will get the ball for the Mets. The Phillies have not yet named their starter.

However, the Mets will have a chance to leapfrog a competitor on Monday. The Brewers host the Cardinals for a doubleheader. If the Brewers are swept by St. Louis, they will fall beneath the Mets in the standings. The Phillies and Marlins will finish their series on Monday as well. The Reds (21-26) currently have the same record as the Mets. They could jump in front of the Mets depending on how they fare in their doubleheader against the Pirates on Monday.
