A Mets split-squad traveled to Space Coast Stadium to play the Washington Nationals, while the rest of the team remained in Port St Lucie to take on the Miami Marlins.

Nationals 11, Mets 5

Jenrry Mejia got the start today and faced off against Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez as both pitchers made their spring debuts.

One inning was the killer for the Mets as the Nationals scored seven runs in the bottom of the 8th off Cory Mazzoni, and eventually they would win the game 11-5.

Mejia competing for the fifth spot in the rotation made his spring debut, but wasn’t really that sharp tossing two innings, giving up a hit, a run and walking two with three strikeouts.

Jacob deGrom, a candidate to break camp with the Mets bullpen, was strong again throwing two innings, allowing only one hit and striking out two.

John Church tossed up a fat pitch to Nationals Brian Goodwin in the 7th inning and he launched it over the right field wall for a two-run home run to tie the game at 4-4.

Taylor Teagarden hit a sac fly to center to score Eric Campbell (2-for-2) who had doubled ahead of him.

Zach Lutz had two hits including a solo home run in the ninth. Anthony Seratelli had a two-run single. Kirk Nieuwenhuis had two hits including a double.

Marlins 5, Mets 2

Jose Fernandez pitched 3 1-3 scoreless innings as the Miami Marlins beat the Mets 5-2 in 10 innings.

Mets starter Dillon Gee allowed one run and four hits in 2.1 innings. He gave up three straight hits to start the second, including an RBI double.

Carlos Torres pitched three innings of solid relief and allowed no earned runs, Jose Valverde threw one scoreless inning.

Eric Young Jr. batted leadoff and went 2-for-3.  Anthony Recker had an RBI single and Matt den Dekker drove in the other Mets run with a sac fly.

Gonzalez Germen took the loss and allowed three earned runs on a pair of hits and two walks.

Coming up: The Mets will travel to Kissimmee, FL to play the Houston Astros at Osceola County Stadium on Thursday in a 1:05 pm start.
