The New York Mets lost 1-0 today to the Washington Nationals at The Ballpark of Palm Beaches. The Mets are now 0-4 this spring against the Nats with one final meeting on March 27.

Pitching

Robert Gsellman looked to strengthen his grip on the fifth starter spot with another good outing. He went 5.1 innings allowing only an unearned run on four hits, two walks and two strikeouts. The 23-year old righty lowered his spring ERA to 1.56 over 17.1 Grapefruit League innings.

Josh Smoker came in with two runners on and one out, retiring two lefties to get out of the inning and stranding both runners. Smoker continues his great spring with only two earned runs allowed in 11 innings.

Hansel Robles pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning with two strikeouts to keep the game at 1-0. Robles has been dominant this spring allowing just three base runners and striking out eight in 5.2 innings.

Paul Sewald worked around a double and a walk to pitch a scoreless eight inning and lowered his spring ERA to 1.59.

Offense

The Mets offense was stagnant the entire afternoon with only fours singles and no walks in the game. Asdrubal Cabrera got the first hit of the game for the Mets in the fourth inning, but was immediately ejected by homeplate umpire Angel Hernandez for arguing the previous pitch in which Cabrera asked for time and wasn’t given it.

Cabrera would then take a slow stroll across the field after being ejected with the visiting clubhouse being in right field.

Yoenis Cespedes, Ty Kelly and Xorge Carrillo each singled.

On Deck

The Mets host the Houston Astros on Friday at First Data Field. Mets ace Noah Syndergaard will be opposed by Astros righty Charlie Morton. The game will start at 1:10 PM and will be televised on SNY.
