The Mets were defeated by the Washington Nationals by a score of 6-0 this afternoon at First Data Field.

Pitching:

Steven Matz toed the rubber to start the game for the Mets today and handed in three innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits, while striking out two.

Next in line was Paul Sewald, who registered two clean innings to lower his preseason ERA to 1.29.

Erik Goeddel and Tom Gorzellany pitched the sixth and seventh innings, respectively and were touched up for a combined five runs on six hits.

Cory Burns and Josh Smoker got the Mets back on track by completing the game with two scoreless frames, but it would all be for naught, as the damage had already been done.

Offense:

The Mets scattered five hits this afternoon but were able to put a run across as Erick Fedde, Vance Worley, Austin Voth, Jeremy Guthrie and Rafael Martin combined to blank the Amazin’s.

Curtis Granderson had perhaps the best day offensively for New York out of the lead-off spot, as the veteran outfielder went 2-for-3 before being spelled by John Mora.

Patrick Biondi, Kyle Johnson and Amed Rosario each chipped in a hit in addition to Granderson.

On deck:

The Mets will next take on the Detroit Tigers tomorrow afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium. Adam Wilk will get the nod for the Mets and will be opposed by former Mets prospect Michael Fulmer. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
