Shit happens.

So apparently free agent Steven Matz was not that enamored with the idea of rejoining the New York Mets after all.

After being ditched by right-hander Noah Syndergaard only days before, the Amazins and new general manager Billy Eppler would’ve loved to have Matz signed, sealed and delivered before everyone departed for the Thanksgiving Weekend.

But the Long Island southpaw apparently had a change of heart overnight, and signed a four-year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals instead.

Boo hoo hoo…

Steve Cohen was not at all happy at how events unfolded and expressed his dissatisfaction on Twitter.

No Uncle Stevie, they don’t. Words and promises never matter in baseball negotiations and that’s always been how the knuckleball tumbles.

I said it a couple of days ago and it’s worth mentioning again… I really feel bad for Steve Cohen. He came in with such high hopes and expectations, but was sucked into the LOL Mets vortex.

One day we’ll be free and clear of that stigma  – I know it – but clearly we’re not out of those woods yet.

The Mets started their offseason by dealing with one rejection after another in their search for a president of baseball operations… a search that ultimately ended without success.

Finding a new general manager did not prove any easier but luckily they found someone willing and able in Billy Eppler.

With the team’s sights now set on bolstering the roster for a new season, the Mets were literally smacked down by their first two choices for the rotation as Noah and Matz gave the Mets a left-right combination to the body.

This makes signing Marcus Stroman an even bigger priority than it was before, especially if the buzz is true that Max Scherzer wants nothing to do with the Mets. Negotiation-wise, Stroman has the Mets exactly where he wants them.

But while the mindset is clearly focused on the rotation right now – justly so – let’s not forget we still have lots of work to do in the outfield and half of the infield. With a nod to Mick Jagger, this team’s in tatters.

It took decades of dysfunction for the Mets to become the punching bag that they often seem like.

Be it players, coaches, managers or executives, you never get the sense anyone is ever really jumping for joy to join the Mets, like we often see with the Dodgers, Cardinals and Yankees.

Agents and players use the Mets to bump up their price in negotiations and then leaving the Amazins hanging with the short end of the stick, time and time again.

You should’ve known something was wrong the second Matz came out of nowhere to say he wanted to be a Met because of unfinished business….

Steve, Billy and Sandy… did you really take that to the bank? You guys have to smarten up and change this dynamic. Seriously.

Fans are tired of waiting… Tired of the missteps… Tired of the drama…

There’s only one cure to get out of this malaise and this quandary…

Winning.

Whatever it takes in terms of dollars, you must attack the rest of this offseason with some gusto and bravado.

Come spring training, give us a team that can get us to the postseason. Give us a team we want to root for. Give us a team we’ll be proud of.

Do that, and all your ills will be cured. I know, I know, easier said than done
