Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom bolstered an already solid case for the National League Cy Young award when he produced his third complete game of his career in Sunday’s 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
DeGrom (8-7, 1.71 ERA) allowed one unearned run on seven hits while striking out nine in a 108-pitch effort, and he saved his best for last, ending his complete game victory with a flourish. His last three pitches of 99, 98 and 99 MPH were the hardest thrown of the night.
With the advent of pitch counts and various relief specialty roles, a major league bullpen is slowly driving the complete game into extinction as we continue to see a sharp decline from season to season.
