Sandy Alderson

Mark Simon of ESPN NY argues that the Mets should not make a big move at the trading deadline.

With the Mets playoff odds sitting at 19% according to Fangraphs, he believes the Mets are unlikely to climb back in the race even with a trade for Justin Upton or Ben Zobrist.

“So though it might seem like the Mets are in the hunt, when your odds are that low, you’re not a two-month rental away from going to the postseason.”

“Now I understand that making no moves would be extremely demoralizing for the players on the current roster, and that’s a perfectly reasonable point. So I’m not saying don’t buy, I’m just saying don’t buy too much.”

“But the key is not to do anything that could damage the long-term plan. As long as Sandy Alderson is making the decisions, they shouldn’t have anything to worry about.”

Simon also thinks it’s unlikely that Michael Conforto will succeed if he’s called up.

While he could struggle like the MLB’s number one ranked prospect Byron Buxton, I think it’s a risk worth taking while Cuddyer is out.

He could provide the team with a much needed spark like Miguel Sano, Joey Gallo and Kyle Schwarber did for their teams. Each of these prospects were called up directly from Double-A, and their development wasn’t damaged.

And are the Mets’ playoff odds really that poor? Sorry I don’t think so and neither does Joe D. There’s half the season left to be played, and New York is only three games back of the Nationals and three back from the Cubs for the final Wild Card spot.

Despite the team’s recent poor play, they will be right back in the mix with one good hot streak. It’s too soon to give up on the season, especially with how talented the rotation is.

But the team desperately needs help from the Front Office and the Front Office needs to be financially supported by ownership.

That means you, Wilpons! Time to stop being part of the problem and to start becoming part of the solution.

The Mets’ lineup ranks as the worst in the National League, so their inability to score runs has to be addressed.
