The domestic-violence allegations surrounding Reds closer Aroldis Chapman caused their trade with the Dodgers to fall through. However, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, the Reds are still trying to trade him.

“The team remains in contact with clubs about Chapman, believing a deal is possible even as the four-time All-Star faces possible suspension (Rosenthal).” He also points out that a lengthy suspension could result in an extra year under team control. He is currently on track to accrue enough time to become a free agent after 2016, however a suspension could put that off until 2017.

The domestic violence incident includes Chapman allegedly “choking” his girlfriend and pushing her against a wall. Then, after the argument, he allegedly fired eight gunshots in his garage.

His attorney, Jay Reisinger, responded to the allegations saying, “On behalf of Mr. Chapman, we vehemently deny the allegations as stated.”

Obviously, whatever team that Chapman is a part of for 2016 could possibly face public relations problems. However, he is still an electric pitcher, and if he does get suspended for a long period of time, it could give his new team an extra year of control over him before free agency.

Should the Mets pursue him? The 27 year-old saved 33 games last season and posted 1.94 FIP and a 1.63 ERA. In 65 games (66.1 IP), he struck out 116 batters, good for 15.7 K/9.

Even more attractive for the Mets, though, is the .120 average lefties have posted against him in his career (righties have managed to bat .166). The Mets need to fortify their bullpen, and Chapman is by far the best reliever on the market right now, lefty or righty. He would form a formidable duo with Jeurys Familia.

Because of the allegations, too, his price tag is probably lowered a bit. However, if the Mets or another team were to trade for him, it would be a gamble regarding both public relations and his contract status.

I’m still on the fence myself as to whether I think the Mets should pursue him or not. His talents are undeniable, but I’m not sure if he’d be able to handle the intense spotlight of New York City while dealing with his legal issues at the same time.
