The Mets announced on Saturday that right-handed pitcher Seth Lugo has a loose body in his right elbow. He will undergo surgery on Tuesday.
The Mets’ announcement said that inflammation that wouldn’t subside forced Lugo to have to inform the Mets medical staff of a bone spur that had broken off. An MRI took place on Feb. 12.
Lugo won’t throw for six weeks before assessing and transitioning into a throwing program, the release said.
Losing Lugo is a huge hit to the Mets pitching staff. Over the past three seasons, he has been one of their best relievers, while occasionally filling as a starter to more mixed results. He really shined in 2019, posting a 2.70 ERA, 11.70 K/9 and 1.80 BB/9 in 61 games pitched.
His dominance in the late innings and all-around versatility will be missed. Hopefully for the Mets, they’ll get him back as soon as possible, especially for a team that’s had bullpen issues in the recent past.
