According to Matt Ehalt of nj.com, Mets pitcher Seth Lugo will begin a throwing program today.

With the prescribed two-week period of rest complete, Lugo will begin throwing from 60 feet on flat ground. It can be assumed that where Lugo goes from there depends on how he responds to his first throwing session.

Lugo had been shut down when it was discovered he had a slight tear in his UCL. Lugo decided to rely on rest rather than getting the Tommy John surgery most pitchers opt for in similar circumstances.

Certainly, the Mets hope he can come back. With his injury and Steven Matz‘s, the next starter in line is Rafael Montero, who has had an uneven start to the season in the Mets bullpen. Should Lugo be able to return, he adds much needed pitching depth, but more than that, he is a very effective starter.

Last year, Lugo was 5-2 with a 2.67 ERA in eight starts and nine relief appearances.
