Seth Lugo was knocked around a bit in his third and worst start of the season Friday night in the 7-3 loss to Arizona.

Lugo lasted five innings and threw 100 pitches, while allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out seven Diamondback hitters.

“I made a few good pitches and they got some good swings on the fastballs and found some holes with breaking balls up in the zone,” Lugo said after the game.

Arizona made Lugo work early as he threw 27 pitches and stranded runners on the corners in the bottom of the first. His 13-inning scoreless streak was quickly snapped, as the red-hot Paul Goldschmidt went the other way on a 3-1 fastball that caught too much plate for a solo home run.

Despite appearing to not have his best stuff, he was able to settle into a groove as he struck out four straight hitters to end the first and in a strong 1-2-3 second against the bottom of the Diamondbacks order. Three of the four strikeouts came via the curveball.

However, Arizona struck again in the third as three straight hits and a sacrifice fly brought two runs home. After singles from Jon Jay and Goldschmidt, Jake Lamb drove in Jay with an RBI single. A batter later, Daniel Descalso made it 3-1 with his sacrifice fly.

“I left a couple of off-speed pitches up in the third inning, and they got a few hits right there,” Lugo said.

Lugo bounced back and seemed to have found his groove again as he retired four of the next five hitters he faced to end the fourth and into the fifth.

However, with two outs in the fifth Arizona struck again. David Peralta roped a first pitch curveball for a single, and then Descalso put the game away with a long two run home run to close the book on Lugo’s night.

“I left the changeup up to Descalso, if I execute that pitch we’re in a different ballgame,” Lugo said.

Lugo has been lights-out for the Mets thus far, and tonight was just a rough patch against a hot offense in a hitter-friendly park. The bullpen certainly misses Lugo’s arm, but with Noah Syndergaard out indefinitely he certainly seems to be in line for more opportunities in the rotation.

Over 50.2 innings this season, Lugo is 2-2 with a 2.49 ERA and 54 strikeouts. As a starter he has posted a 3.00 ERA.
