The Mets experienced something on Saturday they haven’t in nearly two months: A loss from Jacob deGrom.
However, it wouldn’t be a typical deGrom outing if the righty didn’t make history.
With his sixth inning strikeout of Nelson Cruz and tenth of the game, the 29-year-old became the first Mets pitcher since David Cone in 1992 to strikeout 10 or more batters in eight outings.
DeGrom started off his outing at Safeco Field in hot water.
After a clean first, the right-hander was hit in the shin by a comebacker off the bat of the aforementioned Cruz, but it wouldn’t be the worst incident of the inning.
With runners on second and third, deGrom drilled rookie Mitch Haniger in the face. The outfielder was able to leave the field on his own power, but not without some blood and a few loose teeth. Thankfully, Haniger didn’t suffer any broken bones, but will likely need plastic surgery.
Understandably so, deGrom was shaken up after the hit by pitch.
“It’s not easy to pitch after you do that,” deGrom said. “I was trying to go inside there, and it sailed on me. I definitely feel bad about it, and it was not easy to stay out there and reconcentrate.”
The Mariners took advantage of fourth-year veteran as the following batter Jarrod Dyson drove home a pair to put the M’s up 2-0.
“I got myself in trouble in the second inning,” deGrom said, “I felt like my stuff was good, I just wasn’t able to get out of that bases-loaded jam.”
DeGrom allowed an unearned run in the third before settling down.
The right-hander’s final line has him going six innings, allowing two runs (three earned) on five hits, while walking one and striking out 10.
In what goes down as a quality start, the Mets offense couldn’t avenge deGrom as he chased Frank Viola‘s club record of nine straight victories.
New York came within one in the ninth inning after Michael Conforto chipped in a run-scoring hit, but they couldn’t mount another comeback win.
“I definitely want to win every time I go out there but today I wasn’t able to get the win,” deGrom said. “I needed to make a big pitch and I wasn’t able to do it. They were able to drive in a couple runs and their guys did a good job keeping us from scoring.”
The former All-Star fell to 12-4 on the season, but will look to start a new win streak the next time he’s on the hill.
