It was announced Tuesday evening by general manager Billy Eppler that right-handed relief pitcher Sean Reid-Foley will undergo Tommy John surgery. He is scheduled to get the surgery on Wednesday.

Reid-Foley reportedly partially tore his UCL during New York’s April 30th loss against the Philadelphia Phillies. He left the game in the eighth inning with trainers. After the contest it was announced he was evaluating his treatment options.

The 26-year-old Reid-Foley was acquired in the Steven Matz trade back in January of 2021. He has appeared in 19 games for the Mets since the acquisition pitching to an ERA of 5.40 and FIP of 4.27. He has 34 strikeouts and 16 walks over this time.

Despite the struggles on the surface this season, Reid-Foley’s underlying metrics painted an interesting picture. His xERA of 2.85 is much lower than his actual ERA of 5.40. He also has done a good job of limiting hard contact and inducing swing-and-misses. Reid-Foley’s ability to eat up innings while helping preserve the rest of the bullpen will be missed.

Full recovery from Tommy John surgery usually takes at least a year-plus. Reid-Foley is under team control for next season then has three following arbitration seasons. We are wishing Sean Reid-Foley all the best in his recovery.

In his absence, the Mets may rely on Trevor Williams, who has struggled mightily this season, as their long-man in the bullpen. Stephen Nogosek (1.69 ERA in 10.2 IP in Triple-A) is currently with the Mets and Adonis Medina has also gotten run in the big leagues this season. Other bullpen options in the minor leagues are left-hander Alex Claudio (2.25 ERA in 12 IP in Triple-A) and right-hander Colin Holderman (2.61 ERA in 10.1 IP in Triple-A).
