Last night during the New York Mets’ 4-1 defeat against the Philadelphia Phillies, reliever Sean Reid-Foley left the game in the eighth inning. He left with trainers with two outs in the inning after feeling what was described as right elbow discomfort. Before leaving, he gave up a solo home run to Phillies’ slugger Rhys Hoskins. After the game, he was quoted as saying, “Arm just didn’t want to finish it.”

Well, after further examination, which included an MRI earlier Sunday morning, a partially torn UCL was discovered. It is being reported that he will meet with team doctors and medical staff to discuss treatment options. It appears Tommy John surgery may certainly be on the table.

In a reactionary move, the Mets have placed Reid-Foley on the 10-day injured list. The team has also recalled Yoan López from Triple-A Syracuse.

The 26-year-old Reid-Foley was acquired in the Steven Matz trade back in January of 2021. He has appeared in 19 games for the Mets since the acquisition pitching to an ERA of 5.40 and FIP of 4.27. He has 34 strikeouts and 16 walks over this time.

This year Reid-Foley was serving as a long-man of sorts. He would pitch in games were the Mets were not necessarily still in the ballgame to eat up some innings. Reid-Foley has pitched 10 innings and allowed seven hits and six earned runs. He has also walked a high rate of batters, seven to be exact.

Despite the struggles on the surface, Reid-Foley’s underlying metrics paint he may have been a victim of some bad luck. His xERA of 2.85 is much lower than his actual ERA of 5.40. He has also done a good job of limiting hard contact and was doing a good job inducing swing-and-misses. His ability to eat up innings while helping preserve the rest of the bullpen will be missed during his absence.

However, with roster cut-downs approaching it appeared possible Reid-Foley was going to find himself bound for Triple-A Syracuse. Nonetheless, we are wishing Reid-Foley all the best in his recovery and healing process.
