According to Marc Carig of Newsday, lefthanded reliever Scott Rice will undergo season-ending surgery for a hernia.

Rice has been one of the biggest surprises for the Mets this season and has a 3.71 ERA with a league-leading 73 appearances.

In 51.0 innings pitched, Rice has walked 27 while striking out 41, however it was against lefthanded hitters that he really excelled holding them to a .174/.244/.223 slash. Wow…

This explains today’s earlier announcement that Sean Henn was promoted from Las Vegas.
