Savannah 9, Delmarva 3

The Savannah Sand Gnats scored nine unanswered runs to buzz by the Delmarva Shorebirds 9-3 Wednesday night at Historic Grayson. The Gnats have scored nine runs in each of the first two games of the series against Delmarva, both wins.

Trailing 3-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth, the Gnats (11-8) used five walks to score six times against the Birds’ bullpen. Savannah drew 12 walks to tie a season high. DH Jeffrey Glenn began the inning by ripping a solo homerun to bring the Gnats within a run at 3-2. After two walks sandwiched around a double, the Gnats chased reliever Jose Nivar from the game. 1B Jayce Boyd greeted Delmarva reliever Williams Louico with a bases-loaded walk to force home the tying run. A batter later, LF Gregory Pron drew another walk to give the Gnats a 4-3 lead. Louico then walked 3B Cole Frenzel to force in a third run in the inning. Glenn followed with a two-run single into left giving the Gnats a 7-3 lead.

Savannah added two runs in the seventh inning on RBI doubles by Boyd and C Kevin Plawecki.

Savannah starter Matthew Bowman kept the Shorebirds (11-9) in check over six innings, allowing three runs on six hits to earn his third win for the Gnats.

Boyd reached base safely in all five of his plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with a double, three walks and two RBI. Glenn was 3-for-5 with a homer, a run scored and three RBI, all in the sixth inning.

The Shorebirds picked up a run in the top of the first inning. With two outs and the bases clear, 3B Joel Hutter singled up the middle, and then came home on Creede Simpson‘s single up the middle in almost the same spot.

Delmarva added two runs in the fourth inning for a 3-0 advantage.

The Gnats look for the series sweep Thursday at 7:05 when they send RHP Gabriel Ynoa (1-2, 4.20) to the mound against RHP Branden Kline (1-1, 6.28).
