While speaking with reporters on the field pregame at LoanDepot Field on Tuesday afternoon, New York Mets Team President Sandy Alderson took some time to discuss the status of both right-handers Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard.

First, we’ll begin with the ace. For the first time, Alderson revealed that the elbow injury that has kept deGrom sidelined for about two months now is a sprain/partial tear of the UCL in his right elbow. The Mets had previously been calling the injury right elbow inflammation.

While that certainly sounds concerning, Alderson did emphasize that the elbow resolved itself, and deGrom is perfectly fine now.

“A sprain is the lowest grade partial tear. At this point, the sprain has resolved itself. The elbow is, at this point, perfectly intact based on the MRI’s and our clinical evaluations throughout doctors. That’s just the technical term the doctors have used,” Alderson said.

DeGrom has been playing catch, and recently began slowly ramping up his baseball activities. While he’s still not throwing off a slope, the right-hander is reportedly throwing off flat ground at distances more than 100 feet.

The expectation is that deGrom won’t test himself throwing off a mound until about mid-September. However, Alderson did add that the right-hander returning to the big league team this season is still a question mark.

“I don’t expect he is going to get ramped up higher than 75 percent before we have an idea of where this is going. In terms of him pitching that rest of the season, I think that is still very much in the air,” Alderson said.

DeGrom hasn’t pitched since July 7, and after being transferred to the 60-day IL isn’t eligible to return to the team until September 13.

As far as Syndergaard goes, Tuesday is his tenth and final day of COVID quarantine after he tested positive for COVID-19 prior to his second rehab start with the Brooklyn Cyclones last week.

The big right-hander is scheduled to continue his rehab assignment and throw for the Cyclones on Wednesday or Thursday this week. With Syndergaard needing to be ramped up again, Alderson said wouldn’t commit to him making an appearance this season.

Syndergaard threw 16 pitches in one inning of work in his first rehab appearance with the Cyclones back on August 26. He did post videos throwing indoors against a mattress during his quarantine.
