The Mets wasted a brilliant start by rookie Matt Harvey and dropped their eighth straight home game in a crushing 3-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies tonight at Citi Field.
Harvey looked like he was in for a long night after allowing a leadoff solo home run to Jimmy Rollins to give the Phillies a quick 1-0 lead. But the kid turned it up ten notched and would not allow another hit for the rest of his brilliant seven inning performance. Harvey struck out seven and closed out his 2012 season finale with a dazzling display of power, poise, and the promise of an amazing career that lies ahead for him. Harvey finishes his rookie season with a 3-5 record, a 2.73 ERA, and 70 strikeouts in 59.1 big league innings allowing just 42 hits and 26 walks. Take a bow, Matt, you’re gonna be a rock star!
The Mets tied the game in the third when Ruben Tejada singled, stole second with two outs, and scored on a single by Daniel Murphy. The Mets took the lead in the sixth when David Wright hit an opposite-field homer to right-center, his 18th of the season, but only his second since July 28.
Then it was time to hand the ball to the bullpen. You all know how this story ends, right?
With the Mets up 2-1 and two outs in the ninth, Josh Edgin walked Chase Utley and then grooved one to Ryan Howard who quickly deposited the pitch into the night for a go-ahead two-run homer. It was a back-breaker and Howard knew it as he pumped his fist in victory as he rounded the bases. Jonathon Papelbon finsihed the Mets off in the ninth and sealed the deal. Game over!
The Mets have now scored three runs or less in 15 consecutive home games, extending their own franchise record for sucking really, really, bad! They have lost 24 of their last 28 games at Citi Field, and with this loss, they have clinched their fourth consecutive losing season.
