Twins Eyeing Gonzalez

According to Dan Hayes of The Athletic, the Minnesota Twins have shown interest in bringing in former Houston Astros standout utility man, Marwin Gonzalez. As Hayes also noted, the Twins organization has apparently mulled the possibility of signing Gonzalez to a three-year deal.

While the market for Gonzalez has surprisingly moved as slow as a “snail” this offseason, the Twins brass believe the competition to ink the slugger is starting to heat up. Word around the hot stove is, Gonzalez and his representatives at the Boras corporation are seeking a deal in the $60 million range (Buster Onley of ESPN), which up to this point is a price that teams have been unwilling to meet them on.

The soon to be 30-year-old switch hitter, brings a ton of versatility to the table due to the fact that he plays all positions, with the exception of center field, catcher, and pitcher. Gonzalez has also been one of the game’s premier utility players over the past two seasons, averaging a .274/.349/.467 with a 124 wRC+ over the last two years.

Giants Add Vincent

The San Francisco Giants have signed right-handed relief pitcher Nick Vincent to a minor league contract, per Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic. As Alex Pavolic of NBC Sports noted, the deal includes an invite to big league camp.

The 32-year-old pitcher struggled last season posting a career worst in 3.99 ERA, along with a 3.75 FIP, and 1.154 WHIP, which led to the Seattle Mariners choosing to non-tender the reliever. Despite this down season, Vincent has been more than solid throughout his career averaging a 3.17 ERA, 3.09 FIP, 1.108 WHIP and 9.0 K/9, in seven seasons.

Giants Sign Another Reliever

San Fran made an additional move to bolster their bullpen, signing left-handed relief pitcher, Fernando Abad to a minor league deal, per Jon Heyman of Fancred. This deal does not include an invite to major league camp and could potentially earn Abad $800,000 if he were to reach the big league club.

The 33-year-old reliever did not appear in the majors last season (despite initially signing with Mets) after being hit with a 80-game suspension for PEDs. In eight major league seasons, Abad has averaged a 3.65 ERA, 4.22 FIP, 1.300 WHIP. He has also proved to be quite effective against left handed batters over the course of his career, holding them to a stat line of .237/.287/.383 to go along with a 144:31 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Padres Possibly Still in on Harper

As Heyman tweeted out last night, after earlier reports that the San Diego Padres were OUT of the Bryce Harper sweepstakes following their signing of mega star, Manny Machado, ownership is set to meet tomorrow to discuss the possibility of adding the other co-star of this offseason’s free agency, as well.

While Heyman says this scenario is not very likely, he also adds that as of now it is not “out of the question, either.”
