Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic sat down with Mets’ first base coach, Ruben Amaro Jr., to discuss his career, both as a GM and a coach.

Amaro Jr. revealed that he has expressed interest to ownership about wanting to interview for the GM vacancy this offseason and that they “were appreciative of [his] interest.”

The 53-year old served as the Philadelphia Phillies’ GM from 2008-201, in which his team won a World Series and appeared in two. Prior to being hired in that position, Amaro Jr. served as the team’s assistant GM for 10 years, starting after he retired from playing in 1998.

Mickey Callaway‘s first base coach would certainly represent and different and outside the box hire, but Amaro Jr. noted that he also has managerial aspirations and that between the choice of getting a manager’s position or a second chance at GM would be split in his eyes.

The Mets search for their next GM will be extensive and it wouldn’t be too surprising if Amaro Jr. at least received an interview. Currently, Sandy Alderson is technically still the GM, but John Ricco, J.P. Ricciardi, and Omar Minaya have been handling day-to-day operations.
