Mickey Callaway spoke to reporters yesterday and told them that Devin Mesoraco‘s injury has now become a neck and back issue and that the team is unsure about when he will be available to play again, as detailed by Tim Healey of Newsday.
“We had some tests done and all those came back pretty clear, but he is sore at this point. Give him a couple of days off and see where we’re at.”
Callaway added that Mesoraco would be on the disabled list if it weren’t for expanded rosters this month. Mesoraco has not played since leaving the game in the fifth inning on Monday.
It is expected that Mesoraco will not be healthy in time to catch Jacob deGrom‘s start on Sunday, which he previously made his goal to start each of his remaining starts.
Mesoraco, 30, is hitting .213/.295/.374 with 10 home runs and 29 RBI between the Reds and the Mets. The Mets traded for him back in May in exchange for Matt Harvey, but Mesoraco will be a free agent this offseason.
In the meantime, Kevin Plawecki and Tomas Nido will continue to share catching duties, with the former getting the majority of the playing time.
