The baseball world was struck with extremely tragic news on Tuesday as we learned that former Cy Young Award winning pitcher Roy Halladay has died in a plane crash. Halladay was only 40-years-old.

It was reported by the Pasco County Sheriff’s Department that a small plane was spotted down in the Gulf of Mexico about 10 miles west of St. Petersburg on Tuesday around 1:00 pm. The plane was described as an ICON A5 light sport aircraft; the same one Halladay was pictured with in his recent Tweets.

Halladay shared the joy he got from flying his A5 with multiple recent Tweets of his. One such Tweet reads, “I have dreamed about owning a A5 since I retired! Real life is better then my dreams!! Thx Kirk & everyone

The Phillies released a statement about Halladay’s death according to the New York Post.

“We are numb over the very tragic news about Roy Halladay’s untimely death,” the Phillies said in a statement. “There are no words to describe the sadness that the entire Phillies family is feeling over the loss of one of the most respected human beings to ever play the game. It is with the heaviest of hearts that we pass along our condolences to Brandy, Ryan and Braden.”

We at MMO likewise send our thoughts, prayers, and condolences to those closest to Halladay.
