As per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Seattle Mariners have continued to speak with teams regarding their tradeable assets including Robinson Cano, Edwin Diaz, and Jean Segura.
The New York Mets have been most heavily linked to Cano and Diaz over the last 24 hours, with reports on Thursday morning indicating “significant momentum toward a deal”, as per Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.
According to Rosenthal, “[the] Mariners remain in talks with multiple teams involving multiple combos of Cano, Diaz, and Segura”, adding that Seattle is “also talking to teams about those players alone” and that Cano would “likely waive [his no-trade clause] for [the] Mets”.
Earlier in the day, Rosenthal mentioned the Mets’ 2018 first round draft pick Jarred Kelenic and 2016 first-rounder Justin Dunn as prospects “under discussion in talks” with the Mariners, then included the team’s incumbent second baseman Jeff McNeil as being “in play”, as well.
Cano hit .317/.363/.497 with just 24 strikeouts in 179 plate appearances after returning from serving an 80-game PED suspension, giving plenty of reason to believe there’s still something left in the tank for the 14-year MLB veteran.
Diaz, 24, led the American League in saves (57), pitching to a 1.96 earned-run average with a 7.29 strikeout-to-walk ratio (15.2 strikeouts and 2.1 walks per nine innings), 1.61 fielding independent pitching rating, and 208 ERA+ in his third MLB season.
