The New York Mets announced on Thursday night they’ve signed Dilson Herrera to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league camp.
Herrera, still only 24-years old, returns to the team that traded him back in 2016 to the Cincinnati Reds for Jay Bruce. The infielder was originally acquired by the Mets in 2013 from the Pittsburgh Pirates alongside Vic Black in exchange for John Buck and Marlon Byrd.
The former top 100 prospect slashed .184/.268/.414 with five doubles, five home runs and 11 RBI in 97 big league plate appearances in 2018. He played second base, first base, third base and left field for the Reds.
Herrera also hit .297/.367/.465 with 10 doubles and seven home runs in 50 Triple-A games this year.
The right-handed hitter has dealt with lingering shoulder injuries for the past three seasons. He missed a large chunk of the 2017 with a shoulder impingement and finally had surgery to debride his shoulder.
