After six years in the minor leagues, Ronny Mauricio made his major league debut on Friday night. The 90th-ranked prospect according to MLB.com, Mauricio batted ninth and played second base, a position he hadn’t played until this season. The 22-year-old recorded multiple hits in the outing, leaving a strong impression on the team and fans alike.

Mauricio began his career in a big way, working a 2-2 count before roping a fastball for a double over Teoscar Hernández‘s head for the first hit of his big league career. The ball was struck at 117.3 miles per hour, which is the hardest-hit first career hit of the Statcast era according to Jason Bernard of MLB.com.

“It’s incredible. It’s the best honestly,” Mauricio said through his interpreter. “It’s one of those moments I’ll never forget.”

Mauricio struck out on three pitches in his second at-bat, whiffing over a sinker from Logan Gilbert to end the inning. However, in his third at-bat, Mauricio ripped a first-pitch slider through the right side of the infield for a base hit in the bottom of the seventh inning. With his second hit, Mauricio became the first Met since Steven Matz on June 28, 2015, to record multiple hits in his major league debut. That ended up being the last pitch of Gilbert’s night, who didn’t allow a run to be scored in the inning.

“It was in the fifth inning where I kind of stood on second base and I said, ‘Wow is this a dream? Or is this real life?'”, Mauricio added. “Once it set in, it kind of validated all that hard work that we all put in to get to this point.”

Manager Buck Showalter spoke highly of Mauricio’s performance both offensively and defensively in his postgame press conference.

“(He had a) Good double-play start on a tough play, good feed, pop-up look under control, just missed that one ball in the last inning,” Showalter said. “He hit that ball, he’s capable of it. He’s been doing that all year, I know him and I know the people who’ve been working with him and he’ll probably dwell some on the chase, but you got to see, he got a good swing.”

As Mauricio progresses, expect him to move up in the lineup from the nine spot. He also played a fair amount of left field and third base in the minors this year, and the Mets have expressed that they will play him at different positions this month. Mauricio has the chance to prove himself as a major leaguer this month, and he made a strong first impression.
