The Mets (57-55) were defeated by the Arizona Diamondbacks (46-66) by a score of 5-3 tonight at Citi Field.

Pitching:

After dealing with a couple base runners in the first and managing to evade trouble, Steven Matz gave up a long ball to Brandon Drury in the top of the second to give the Diamondbacks an early 1-0 lead.

Matz settled down and set down the next three batters to end the inning, and then struck out the side in the third.

Matz struck out two more batters in the fourth and had a painless fifth, but was hurt by the home run again in the sixth as Paul Goldschmidt took the Long Island native deep.

Thankfully for Matz though, the two homers were solo shots so the Mets found themselves still in the game.

Matz’s final line has him going six innings, allowing the two runs on five hits, while walking one and striking out nine.

The Mets took the lead and handed the ball over to Hansel Robles in the seventh, which would prove to be detrimental, as Robles was touched up for three runs and was chased from the game without completing the inning.

Josh Edgin finished off the seventh and recorded the first out of the eighth before Erik Goeddel was called upon to finish off the inning, which he did successfully.

Offense:

The Mets got on the board first tonight, as they got a couple men on for James Loney, who plated a run with a groundout. Not the most productive way to score, but it was efficient.

This would be the only run they could muster up against Zack Greinke, until the bottom of the sixth when the white hot Neil Walker knocked in a pair with his 19th homer of the year to put the Mets back on top 3-2.

After Robles’ meltdown in the seventh which gave the Diamondbacks a 5-3 lead, the Mets had a chance to tie the game in the eighth with Neil Walker on base and the dangerous Jay Bruce at the plate, but Bruce struck out to end the threat.

On deck:

The series with Arizona continues on tomorrow night, as Bartolo Colon (10-6, 3.46 ERA) taking on Robbie Ray (5-11, 4.83 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM.
