Mickey Callaway told reporters prior to Wednesday night’s game against the Cleveland Indians that Robinson Cano took batting practice at Citi Field before the game and that he could begin running on Thursday.

Cano, 36, was placed on the 10-day IL with a hamstring strain which was later revealed to be a tear. It was expected that he would miss 4-6 weeks, but given the fact that he is set to start running in the near future, it appears he could return closer to the four week timetable.

The second baseman is having the worst year of his career with the Mets as he is hitting .252/.295/.415 with 10 home runs and 32 RBI to give himself a 88 OPS+ and -0.1 WAR.

However, he was starting to find his groove in the second half as he was hitting .289/.318/.578 with six home runs and 14 RBI after the All-Star break. In 15 August at-bats, he was 9-for-15 with one home run, four doubles, and three RBI.
