Mets veteran infielder Robinson Canó returned to action on Tuesday night in the Dominican Winter League after missing a couple of weeks with lower back discomfort.

Canó, 39, went 2-for-5 in the game with an RBI for the Estrellas Orientales. He’s now hitting .310 with six RBIs in seven games, though he has yet to produce an extra base hit and has walked only once.

Canó is under contract with the Mets for the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Seattle paying only $3.75 million of the $24 million salary each season.

The Mets front office has been pretty quiet on the Canó front outside of what Sandy Alderson said last month, “How he is received will depend on how he conducts himself  and explains himself between now and spring training.”

To this point, we’ve heard nothing to suggest the Mets would simply release Canó. That type of action likely depends on what the new CBA looks like in terms of having a universal DH or not.

Keep in mind that cutting Canó gives the Mets a roster spot, though they’re still on the hook for his remaining salary regardless.
