The first half of the season proved to be an incredibly rough one for Robinson Cano as he was hitting .240/.287/.360 with four home runs and 18 RBI. However, Cano made a statement on Tuesday night that the second half isn’t going to go the same way.

In the fourth inning, Robinson Cano crushed a 2-0 pitch from Chris Paddack into the Coca Cola Corner in right field to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.

Two innings later, Cano came to the plate with Pete Alonso on first base with nobody out, and took a 1-2 pitch from Paddack into the bullpen to extend their lead to 3-0.

The 36-year-old wasn’t done there, though, as with Alonso on first again, Cano took the first pitch from lefty, Logan Allen, into the bullpen to give the Mets a 5-0 lead. The eventually won by a final of 5-2.

On the night, Cano finished 4-for-4 with the three homers, a single, and five RBI. That was the 13th time a Mets player has hit three home runs in a game, with the most recent one prior to Tuesday night being Yoenis Cespedes on April 11, 2017.

It was also the first time Cano had hit three homers in a game in his career and while he’s had some very memorable moments such as winning the World Series back in 2009 and been one of the league’s best players for over a decade, this one still had special meaning to him.

“As a player, that’s another thing in the game that you would like to do to see how it feels,” Cano said. “This really feels good.”

Prior to Tuesday night’s game, Cano had merely one home run at Citi Field and six homers overall in 2019. Since the All-Star Break, he has more than doubled the total he had prior it, with five second-half homers now.

In 10 games since the All-Star Break, Cano is now hitting .342/.366/.789 with the previously mentioned five homers and nine RBI. On the year as a whole now, the left-handed slugger is hitting .254/.298/.418 (.716 OPS) with nine homers, 27 RBI, and 90 OPS+ to give himself a -0.1 bWAR.

The Mets will certainly be hoping that what they’ve seen from Cano since the All-Star Break is more of what they will see going forward as, aside from the immense help he could provide for the team going forward, they will still have him for four more years after this one.
