The last time Jose Reyes played left field was in 2000 as a teenager in the Mets farm system.

Whether Reyes is on the team next year remains to be seen, but the Mets are trying whatever they can now as they stumble towards the finish line.

“I thought if we’re going to put him out there, put him in a place where it’s a little bit easier to roam around,” Mets manager Terry Collins said before the game. “It’s a smaller park. We’ll see how he does. We’ve got to find out and get him out there.”

The 23-year-old Chris Flexen was on the hill for the Mets on Tuesday and saw the repercussions of the infielder playing out of position at the forefront.

In the second inning, Reyes misplayed a fly ball off the bat of Billy Hamilton, initially breaking in and realizing he should have done the opposite, thus seeing it sail over his head.

A flustered Flexen, who was tagged for five runs in the first inning that included a grand slam from Scott Schebler threw his arms up in anger after the defensive miscue.

“I was frustrated, as soon as the game was over, [I] went over addressed him. Apologized for that,” Flexen said. “He mentioned he didn’t see it, nobody addressed me. Regardless of what happens, frustration or whatever that can’t happen I addressed that immediately.”

Reyes said he didn’t see Flexen toss his hands up, but appreciated him taking it upon himself to apologize.

“He should know a little bit better, I don’t even know what happened, he apologized, he knows it’s my first time out there. I appreciate that coming from him,” Reyes said. “I was out there first time, grinding, tried to catch it. It’s not easy when they throw you out there for the first time. I try to do my best.”

It was a sloppy, forgettable night all around for New York, who were roughed up for another seven runs in the eighth inning that led to an ultimate 14-4 drubbing.

While it’s likely the Mets will play a few more stinkers the rest of the way, there were several small victories for New York.

Dominic Smith busted out of his 0-for-11 slump at the dish with two hits, including a two-run single. Jeurys Familia also chipped in a scoreless 1 2/3 innings since returning from the disabled list.

The Mets look to get back on track Wednesday with Rafael Montero getting the ball.
