To say Jose Reyes has had a bad year would be a vast understatement.
In fact, it’s almost unfathomable that the 35-year-old washed up veteran even still has a Major League job.
Angry fans have been calling for his head for months, but the team failed to bite the bullet and cut the reeling infielder, likely due in part to his history with the team and money he is owed.
Reyes has acknowledged his bad season at times, has tried to remain positive, and has even said he’d welcome a comeback next season if the team would have him.
But prior to Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the reality of Reyes’s situation has set in for the infielder.
“I know I’m not going to be here next year,” Reyes told MLB.com‘s Anthony DiComo. “So, for me, it’s taking every opportunity and trying to enjoy the game, because I don’t even know if I’m going to be playing baseball next year. I just need to enjoy this month of the season around my teammates, because I don’t know what the future holds for me.”
Reyes signed a $2 million deal to return to the Mets for 2018, in what was supposed to be a super utility role. However, after voicing his frustration to the media about his lack of playing time, the 16-year vet received more playing time.
In 97 games for New York in 2018, Reyes has hit .198/.267/.337 with four homers and 15 RBI. His advanced numbers are even uglier.
He has a 66 wRC+ and .263 wOBA this year, and has been worth -0.8 fWAR.
“Even though I’ve been better lately, it hasn’t been that good,” Reyes said. “This has been my worst season ever.”
However, Reyes told DiComo that he feels healthy, and if the Mets choose not to re-sign him, he could seek opportunities elsewhere if they present themselves.
“I’ve been in this game for a long time, man,” Reyes said, “But this is what I love to do. If my body says yes, if there’s some opportunity there, maybe I’ll take it.”
