Jose Reyes was in New York taking in last night’s Knicks-Nets game at the Nassau Coliseum. He spoke with ESPN New York and told them it would be hard to fathom the Mets without David Wright.

“They should sign David [long term],” Reyes said. “He’s been the face of the franchise for a long time. If they let him go, that’s gonna be difficult to see the New York Mets without David Wright. I can’t imagine that. You never know in this game what’s gonna happen, but I wish all the best to David. He’s a good friend of mine.”

Reyes and Wright grew up together in the Mets system. Their career paths bonded them and when they finally arrived their names for the next seven years would be forever linked. You couldn’t say Wright without saying Reyes and vice-versa.

Before the start iof the 2011 season, after the Mets said they would not negotiate with Reyes before the season and Reyes responded by saying he wouldn’t negotiate once the season started, David Wright made similar comments about retaining Reyes.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I know what I hope happens, I hope he’s to my left next season,” Wright said. “Hopefully the organization values Jose the way that I do. Hopefully Jose kind of reciprocates that. Hopefully they work something out.”

“My goal is for Jose to come out here and have an All-Star-caliber year, carry us into the playoffs and then it really forces kind of the hand a little bit…I want him playing to the left of me, and I want him hitting leadoff in the lineup that I’m in, because I think he makes me a better player.”

I still believe that the Mets will give Wright whatever it takes to keep him a Met. If that ends up being a $100 million dollar deal it will be a mistake and they will regret it in the latter years. But then again who really knows what will really happen?

This front office made it sound like it was all systems go on negotiations after the season ended. Reports came out that re-signing Wright and Dickey were top priorities. Leaks came out that the Mets would offer Wright $100 million as a starting point. Days after that another another leak came out that a deal would get done by the World Series…  Season tickets for 2013 also went on sale while all those leaks were coming out.

There hasn’t been a whisper about any negotiation going on by either side in two weeks now. How is that even possible in this day and age?

See where I’m going with this? Really? Well good for you because I don’t even know where I’m going. It’s hard to see anything with all this smoke. 😉
