According to multiple reports, the New York Mets have signed third basemen Eduardo Escobar to a deal of two years, 20 million dollars. The deal also reportedly has a third-year option.
Escobar spent the 2021 season with both the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Milwaukee Brewers. Escobar is currently 32 years old, and will turn 33 by Opening Day.
Between the two teams, Escobar had a slash line of .254/.314/.472, with 28 home runs and 90 runs batted in. Escobar hit considerably better as a Brewer than as a Diamondback, putting together an impressive line of .268/.342/.458 in 199 plate appearances. He was also named a 2021 National League All-Star.
As mentioned in John Flanigan’s Free Agent Profile, it seems likely that J.D. Davis will not return to the Mets next season, and Escobar could fill that hole at third base. Escobar also brings some defensive versatility, as he has played some outfield, along with all of the infield positions throughout his career.
Escobar is by far the biggest splash the Mets have made in free agency so far, and fans hope he is the first of many big names the Mets ink down this off-season.
