Eileen Lehpamer of News 12 Long Island is reporting that Long Island Ducks manager and former Mets second baseman Wally Backman was arrested at 7:30 am this morning after a physical altercation with his girlfriend.
Backman, 59, is facing second-degree harassment and fourth-degree criminal mischief charges and was arraigned in Riverhead court earlier today. He was released without bail.
Backman’s girlfriend claimed that he pushed her into a wall, twisted her hand, and allegedly tried to prevent her from calling the police by grabbing and injuring her hand.
The woman suffered a cut that required medical attention.
The Long Island Ducks issued a statement that reads:
“We are aware of the incident and in the process of gathering information.”
This report will be updated as further details become available.
