The post-mortem on the 2025 Mets has already begun, and as a result, the team is making “several changes to (its) coaching staff.” This, according to Andy Martino of SNY.
The Mets have no plans to fire Carlos Mendoza, according to Martino’s reporting, but the safe names stop there.
It remains to be seen who will be replaced on the Mets’ coaching staff, and who will lead the effort in finding those replacements.
There are many holdovers from before Mendoza’s time as manager. Eric Chavez became the hitting coach during Buck Showalter’s first season as manager. He was then promoted to bench coach in 2023 and subsequently returned to the role of hitting coach ahead of the 2024 season. The 2022 team had the second-best batting average in baseball (.259) and was fifth-best in runs per game (4.77). The Mets then had the fifth-worst batting average in 2023 (.238), 13th-best in 2024 (.246) and 14th best in 2025 (.249).
Jeremy Barnes was Chavez’s assistant hitting coach in 2022, was promoted to hitting coach in 2023, and has been the co-hitting coach alongside Chavez the last two seasons.
Jeremy Hefner has been the pitching coach for multiple managerial, GM, and ownership regimes. Hefner first took the job ahead of the 2020 season. Of course, one of the longest tenured Mets’ coaches played with the team between 2012 and 2013.
Coaches who arrived in New York alongside Mendoza in 2024 include bench coach John Gibbons, third base coach Mike Sarbaugh, and first base coach Antoan Richardson (the coach who has received the most praise in 2025 for his effort in helping the Mets steal bases at a fantastic rate).
Who will remain and who will be replaced remains one of the most pressing questions heading into a busy offseason for the Mets.
