The Major League Baseball Players Association has filed a grievance stating MLB did not act in good faith to play as many games as possible last year, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Players are reportedly seeking an estimated $500 million in damages. MLB has filed a counter-grievance.

While not specific on the number of games that should have been played the $500 million figure should provide an additional 20-25 games worth of pay for players. MLB players received about 37% of their salaries during the abbreviated season. The 2020 regular season consisted of only 60 games.

The league is hoping to “fast-track” the union’s grievance with the current collective bargaining agreement expiring on December 1. It is believed there is time to settle the grievance and negotiate a new deal. If no agreement is reached prior to Dec. 1 then a lockout looms, freezing all offseason business.

Still, a fast-tracked grievance could take months to decide. Martin Scheinman is the mutually agreed-upon third-party neutral arbitrator in this situation.

MLB declined to comment.
