ESPN’s Jeff Passan listed the Mets as one of the teams “in” on DJ LeMahieu this offseason in his insider article Monday. The Mets were joined by the Yankees (obviously), the Blue Jays, and the Dodgers–basically the teams looking to spend money during free agency–as the primary teams interested in the towering infielder’s services, with other teams sure to be in the mix.
MMO reported at the beginning of the month that LeMahieu and the Yankees were at a “stalemate” in their contract negotiations. Having a handful of teams also making strides to sign him is sure to further complicate talks. The Yankees are still the likely team to retain the 32-year-old, with MMO also reporting last month that LeMahieu would take a discount to re-sign with the Bombers.
LeMahieu would be a solid addition for the Mets, with a new-found hole at second base due to the suspension of Robinson Cano. He’s also played over 700 major-league innings at third base, which would allow Jeff McNeil to play his more natural position in second base.
