The New York Mets will look at back-end starters this offseason but it’s not considered a priority by the organization according to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag Sports.
Mets starting pitchers had a disappointing 5.14 ERA in 2017 breaking the previous franchise record of 4.77 that was set in 1962 and 2009. They also threw only 865.2 innings, the fourth fewest in the majors.
Injuries crippled the rotation with Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, Steven Matz, Robert Gsellman, Zack Wheeler, Seth Lugo and Tommy Milone all seeing time on the disabled list.
Jacob deGrom was the only starter that lived up to expectations in a rotation that saw Rafael Montero make 18 starts.
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has made it clear that he sees the bullpen as a bigger area of need than rotation. The Mets have recently been linked to relievers such as Bryan Shaw, Joe Smith and Mike Minor as they look to bulk up their bullpen.
Looks like the Mets hope the combo of new pitching coach Dave Eiland and new manager Mickey Callaway will be the best additions to help the 2018 starting rotation.
