According to the account MetsRewind on twitter, former Mets’ play-by-play man Gary Throne will return to the booth and broadcast the Mets’ series in Pittsburgh this weekend along side Keith Hernandez.

The news was confirmed by Mike Puma of the New York Post on Thursday afternoon. Gary Cohen has the Pirates series off, so Thorne will be filling in for the weekend.

Thorne, now 73, has worn many hats in the sports television world, including Mets play-by-play, the original NHL on ESPN, MASN with the Orioles, international sports broadcast on the Armed Forces Network, the famed “Who do you think you are? I am” bowling championship, and several others.

Thorne called games with Bob Murphy for four years beginning in the 1985 season. He is renowned for his calls during the Mets’ historic 1986 playoff run that lead to the team’s second World Series title. He was also on the call for several other historic Mets’ moments, including Robin Ventura’s grand slam single.

The Hall of Famer also did work for the Mets from time-to-time from 1994 through 2002.

Most notably, Thorne was the Orioles’ lead man from 2007 through the end of the 2019 season. It was reported that Thorne and MASN got into a dispute over Covid related issues, and that dispute lead to his ultimate departure in early 2021.
