Francisco Álvarez is open to an extension to stay with the Mets longterm, according to Tim Healy of Newsday.com.

Álvarez, the former No. 1 overall prospect in Major League Baseball, reportedly is open to signing an extension to stay in Queens. According to Healy, neither side is under any pressure to get a deal done, but the catcher at least wanted to start a dialogue.

While signing Álvarez to a contract will be more expensive and premature, it makes sense for both sides. Álvarez would get rewarded early and have less financial instability, while the Mets could lock up their rookie catcher through arbitration.

Despite costing the Mets more money now, it could potentially save them money in the future. If Álvarez develops into the player most believe he will become, then the Mets get him at a discount in the future.

As of now, a potential deal between the two parties hasn’t materialized. Healy in his article states that a contract extension isn’t on the Mets’ agenda and is usually something that is discussed prior to spring training.

Álvarez is coming off an inconsistent but electric rookie year. He clubbed 25 homers and recorded a .721 OPS in 2023.
