The Red Sox have agreed to terms with former Rays reliever Dan Wheeler, according to Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe.
He will receive $3 million from the Red Sox in 2011, but the deal also includes a vesting option for 2012 worth $3 million if he appears in 65 games next season and $3.25 million if he appears in 75 games.
Wheeler, 33, posted a 3.35 ERA in 64 appearances for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2010. He joins a Boston bullpen that has been bolstered for a division title chase this offseason as they have already added former White Sox closer Bobby Jenks along with a few other arms in Andrew Miller, Lenny DiNardo and Matt Albers to the mix.
Although Wheeler was a Type-A free agent, the Rays did not offer him arbitration so they will not receive any draft pick compensation.
