Chad Jennings of The Athletic reports Tampa Bay Rays Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom is currently the favorite to replace the recently ousted Dave Dombrowski, who was the President of Baseball Operations.
Jon Heyman of MLB Network has backed up that report by saying the Red Sox are close to naming Bloom as their new baseball ops leader.
In a sense, this benefits the New York Mets as their current Assistant GM, Allard Baird, is one of the few known candidates for the Red Sox job. Should Bloom accept the job, Baird will likely remain a part of the Mets organization.
Bloom, 36, has been a member of the Rays front office for 15 years. In those 15 years, he’s had his hands in many different parts of the organization, and his duties have included but were not limited scouting, budgeting, trade discussions, and strategic planning.
Bloom is an enticing candidate for a Red Sox team that is purportedly looking to get under the luxury tax threshold, but they have their work cut out for them.
As evidenced by his tenure in Tampa Bay , Bloom has experience winning with small budgets. It’s one of the reasons Bloom seemed to be the right candidate for the Mets GM job last year.
Ultimately, Bloom finished up as the runner up to Brodie Van Wagenen. This time, it seems if he wants the Red Sox job, it’s his.
