The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals by a score of 7-5 on Friday night at Nationals Park. The win was their first in nine days and snapped their five-game losing streak.
Pitching
Jacob deGrom started today looking to end the Mets skid. He produced a quality start in seven innings as he limited the Nationals to one walk, six hits, and three runs on two home runs. Perhaps the most notable aspect of the start was his 12 strikeouts.
After 112 pitches, deGrom handed the ball over to the bullpen with a 7-3 lead. Jerry Blevins started off the eighth. He got Adam Eaton to line out, gave up a single to Trea Turner, and struck out Bryce Harper before being replaced by Addison Reed. Reed gave up a two-run homer to Ryan Zimmerman before getting the final out of the inning.
Jeurys Familia came into the ninth looking to pick up his first save of the season. Instead he loaded the bases with no outs. After getting one out, Terry Collins replaced Familia with Josh Edgin. Edgin then got Harper to ground into a double play to pick up his second career save.
Offense
The majority of the Mets offense in this game came from the bat of Travis d’Arnaud. The catcher hit a two-run homer in the second to give the Mets an early 2-0 lead. After the Nationals took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second, d’Arnaud hit a three-run homer in the fourth to put the Mets back in front 5-3.
The Mets extended their lead in the eighth as they loaded the bases with no outs. Kevin Plawecki drove in a run with his first hit of the season. Michael Conforto followed with a bases-loaded walk to make it a 7-3 lead.
Aside from d’Arnaud, T.J. Rivera had a solid night as he went 2-for-4 with three runs and a walk. Asdrubal Cabrera and Jose Reyes also had two hits in the game.
On Deck
Zack Wheeler (1-2, 5.40 ERA) will take the mound for the Mets on Saturday against Stephen Strasburg (2-0, 2.89 ERA). First pitch will be at 1:05 PM and the game will be televised on PIX 11.
