The New York Mets (48-56) were defeated by the Colorado Rockies (61-46) by a score of 5-4 at Coors Field Tuesday evening.
Pitching:
Steven Matz was on the mound for the Mets tonight and desperately needed a good start after a string of four straight stinkers. He took a no-hitter into the 5th inning, unfortunately the fun didn’t last and the Rockies got to Matz in the 6th inning for three runs. All in all, Matz went 5 innings allowing three runs while walking two and striking out two.
Charlie Blackmon led off the sixth inning with a single. DJ LeMahieu then followed with a double to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Nolan Arenado was next and promptly parked his 24th home run of the year over the center field wall to give the Rockies a 3-2 lead. Mark Reynolds followed by lining a double to left field before Matz’s night was finally done.
Josh Smoker and Erik Goeddel were able to work around the double and limit the damage to finish out the inning.
Paul Sewald came on for the Mets in the bottom of the seventh inning and pitched a scoreless inning.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Sewald was called on again and he gave up a lead off single. Terry Collins then went to his lefty Jerry Blevins but things didn’t go so well. Blevins allowed soft infield singles to both Gerardo Parra and Carlos Gonzalez that brought home the lead runner to tie the game 4-4.
In the bottom of ninth inning, Hansel Robles came in to pitch. Robles walked the leadoff hitter before giving up an infield single to DJ LeMahieu. Nolan Arenado followed with a single to center field to bring in the winning run and send the Mets packing.
Offense:
Michael Conforto got the Mets started with a lead-off walk in the top of the first inning. Two batters later Yoenis Cespedes brought him home with his 13th double of the season to give the Mets the early 1-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, Yoenis Cespedes led off the inning with a single to left field. Jay Bruce followed by smacking a double to right field to score Cespedes and make the score 2-0.
In the top of the seventh inning, Jose Reyes struck out swinging but was able to make it to first base on a passed ball by catcher Ryan Hanigan. Conforto followed with a single to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Reyes came in to score when Asdrubal Cabrera hit a sacrifice fly to Charlie Blackmon and when he went to throw home, he spiked the ball into the ground.
In the top of the eighth inning, Jay Bruce crushed his 28th home run of the year over the right field wall to give the Mets the 4-3 lead. Three hitters later, Amed Rosario recorded his first Major League hit, an infield hit to shortstop Trevor Story.
Notes:
Amed Rosario went 1-for-4 with a strikeout in his debut.
Robert Gsellman pitched three scoreless innings in a rehab start tonight.
Juan Lagares, also rehabbing, went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
On Deck:
The Mets will play their second game of a three-game set with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field tomorrow evening at 8:40 PM ET. Chris Flexen (0-1, 9.00 ERA), will make his second career start and look to get the Mets a win against Tyler Chatwood (6-11, 4.78 ERA).
