The New York Mets (57-74) were defeated by the Cincinnati Reds (56-76) by a score of 14-4 at Great American Ball Park Tuesday evening.
Pitching:
Chris Flexen took the hill for the Mets tonight and had a rough outing. All in all, Flexen went 4.2 innings allowing seven runs while walking four and striking out four.
The Reds got to Flexen right away tonight in the bottom of the first inning. The Reds put up a five spot that was capped off with a Scott Schebler grand slam, his 26th home run of the season.
In the bottom of fifth inning, Flexen ran into trouble again. Zack Cozart got things started with a lead off single to right field. Joey Votto followed with a walk before Flexen got Adam Duvall to ground into a double play while moving a runner to third. Scooter Gennett singled home the run to give the Reds a 6-1 lead. Eugenio Suarez then coaxed a two-out walk before Terry finally went to his pen in favor of Josh Smoker. Smoker promptly gave up an inherited run when Scott Schebler singled to right field to give the Reds a 7-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, with one out, Jeurys Familia was called to come in and get some work. Terry Collins double-switched him into the game, removing Amed Rosario and plugging Jose Reyes back at shortstop. Regardless, Familia looked really good tonight pitching 1.2 scoreless innings and registering three strikeouts.
Chasen Bradford came on in the bottom of the eighth inning and he took his first major beating of the season. Bradford gave up 7 runs tonight but Terry Collins gave Mets fans something to cheer for. Catcher Kevin Plawecki came on with the bases loaded to pitch with the bases loaded and nobody out.
Plawecki got the Reds to hit into a double play and was able to get out of the inning without being charged a run.
Offense:
The Mets scored the first run of the night in the top of the first inning. Jose Reyes led off the game with a walk and Asdrubal Cabrera brought him home with a double off the left field wall.
In the top of the sixth inning, Travis d’Arnaud smacked a double to left field to put runners on second and third with two outs. Dominic Smith brought them both home by lacing a single to right field cutting the lead to 7-3.
Asdrubal Cabrera was able to add a run in garbage time in the top of the ninth inning with a RBI single.
Notes:
The Mets entered tonight winners of 14 straight against the Reds.
The Mets are awaiting the results of a second opinion on Michael Conforto’s shoulder.
On Deck:
The Mets will play their second game of a three game set with the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park tomorrow evening. The game has a start time of 7:10 PM. Rafael Montero (2-9, 5.64 ERA), will look to get the Mets a win against Homer Bailey (4-6, 7.99 ERA).
