The Mets (58-75) were defeated by the Cincinnati Reds (57-77) by a score of 7-2 Thursday afternoon at Great American Ball Park.
Offense
Both runs were scored by Jose Reyes today, who hit leadoff again. He hit a ground-rule double to begin the game, and after being moved to third by Amed Rosario, Asdrubal Cabrera brought him in with a sacrifice fly.
The other run came on a Brandon Nimmo single with Reyes on third and Cabrera on first in the third inning. Nimmo scorched a line drive back to the mound which hit Reds pitcher Robert Stephenson in the hip. He stayed in the game and limited the Mets to those two runs on five hits and three walks in 6.0 innings, striking out seven.
Travis d’Arnaud and Juan Lagares also notched hits, as did Travis Taijeron with his first Major League hit – a double to left field.
The Mets were 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position today.
Pitching
Jacob deGrom started for the Mets and suffered his eighth loss on the season – he is now 14-8. He allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks in 6.0 innings, striking out five and allowing one home run to Scooter Gennett.
Jacob has set a new career-high with 206 strikeouts this season.
Jeurys Familia relieved deGrom in the seventh inning and was removed after allowing a solo home run to Joey Votto. Throwing mostly sliders and splitters, the only fastball he threw was 93.4 mph which is cause for concern.
Jerry Blevins pitched a third of an inning, allowing one run on one hit. Erik Goeddel finished the game pitching one inning, but after walking Scott Schebler he allowed a two-run home run to Stuart Turner.
On Deck
The Mets will send Matt Harvey (4-3, 5.25 ERA) to face off against the Astros and Charlie Morton (10-6, 3.88 ERA) in Houston for the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Game two will feature Seth Lugo (5-3, 4.85 ERA) facing off against Brad Peacock (10-2, 3.12 ERA). Game one is at 2:10 p.m. ET and game two begins at 8:10 p.m. ET.
