The New York Mets fell to the Washington Nationals 6-3 as they completed the series sweep at Citi Field.

Pitching

Zack Wheeler struggled in the first inning giving up a grand slam to Daniel Murphy but was solid after that. Wheeler prevailed and threw seven innings allowing four hits and four runs while striking out six. His secondary pitches were very dominant on the night.

Josh Smoker pitched next and allowed a two run homer to Ryan Zimmerman.

Jeurys Familia tossed a scoreless inning in his third outing since returning from suspension.

Offense

Michael Conforto stayed red hot, reaching base three times. Conforto homered in the first and lined two singles. Conforto also made a nice sliding grab in foul territory.

Neil Walker also homered, his second of the season, a two run shot.

Jay Bruce picked up a base hit in the ninth.

Notes

With tonight’s loss, the Mets are now 10-27 in their last 37 games at Citi Field vs. the Nationals. The last time the Nationals swept a three-game series from the Mets was June 27-29, 2016. It’s the first three-game sweep by the Nationals in New York since August 12-14, 2014.

Zack Wheeler retired 19 of the last 22 batters he faced after allowing a first-inning grand slam to Daniel Murphy. It was Wheeler’s first outing of at least 7.0 innings since August 27, 2014 vs. Atlanta.

Since 2015, Daniel Murphy is batting .520 (13-25) with two doubles, one triple, two grand slams and 36 RBI with the bases loaded.

Michael Conforto hit his fourth home run of the season with his leadoff homer in the bottom of the first off Max Scherzer. It was the first home run that Scherzer has allowed this season. The homer was Conforto’s third career homer off Scherzer, the most he’s hit off any opposing pitcher.
